1983 Gulfstar SAILMASTER

The Gulfstar Sailmaster has an open and airy raised main salon that features large fixed windows. She is an ideal boat for a couple to live aboard or cruise extensively. The covered center cockpit provides security while sailing and comfort while at anchor. Her lavish teak interior and luxurious accommodations  provides a warm and inviting atmosphere for owners and guests.  Once aboard, you may never want to leave.

Yellow Rose was a Sailmaster 50 foot expertly extended to 55 feet to provide better sailing characteristics, better lines and more lazarette storage and a convenient drop down swim platform. 

Gulfstar offered three different layouts versions, Yellow Rose has the rare and preferable configuration that has a dining settee opposite the Gourmet Style Galley which allows the Raised Main Salon to remain open for entertaining. 

The Gulfstar Sailmaster was the vision of the legendary designer and builder Vince Lazzara. This is not an ordinary sailboat and Vince was not an ordinary man. Mr Lazzara was one of the pioneers of fiberglass boat building. He started back in the 1950's and built the first fiberglass boat over 40', the Rhodes Bounty 41. Vince sold his successful company to Grumman Manufacture, who started Pearson Yachts. Vince, then created another successful company called Columbia Yachts, which he sold in 1967. Being a dynamic designer, innovator and entrepreneur, he started Gulfstar Yachts in 1970, which built sailing and motor yachts from 36' to 80'. Vince Lazzara's legacy is continued today by his two sons at Lazzara Yachts in Tampa, Florida, which is considered one of the world's premier mega-yacht builders.

Gulfstar's superior teak interior joinery work features laminated door frames, laminated counter fiddles and radiused corner on all furniture pieces for strength, durability and beauty.  Even after decades of use, the Gulfstar Sailmaster interiors have withstood the test of time and are still stunningly beautiful.

Starting forward: Guest stateroom with V-berth, 3 drawers and volume storage below; cabinet storage to port and starboard; full height hanging locker to starboard and overhead hatch. En suite head to port with head, sink, hand held shower.

Aft to port is a huge Gourmet Style Galley with stove and oven, microwave, new custom stand up refrigerator/freezer with holding plates and abundant storage which includes 4 drawers, above counter storage and volume storage below sink. Comfortable dinette to starboard with storage above and volume storage below.

Up and aft 3 steps to light and airy salon with port side settee with custom tool storage below and storage behind;  2 comfortable captains chairs to starboard with table between and storage outboard. Navigation station aft to starboard. Bar aft of settee to port with a diesel heater

Down and aft 3 steps to small hallway with full height storage locker to starboard which can accommodate a stack washer/dryer (Replaced 2013); aft to master with queen berth with drawer storage below, 4 large drawers to starboard, 2-door full height hanging locker to port and full height dressing mirror on forward bulkhead. En suite head with 6'3" headroom, electric head, sink and stall shower.

Up and aft 6 steps from salon to cockpit with U-shaped seating, starboard walk-thru to deck; centerline helm; removable cocktail table; hard top with full enclosure and aft facing settee behind cockpit seating.

IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO BOAT SINCE PURCHASE

This boat has been constantly upgraded since purchase in 1998.  Listed are only the high cost items below.  All recommendations made on previous surveys have been complied with.

DECK, COCKPIT, AND HULL:

Cockpit Bimini:  Bimini was replaced in the summer of 2002 with a high quality hard top.  Hardtop is 1 ½ FRP sandwich construction mounted on a 2 inch anodized aluminum frame.  A Bomar hatch was installed in order to see the main sail.  High quality plastic drop curtains were installed around the complete cockpit area.  Total cost = $12,000.

Teak:  Teak was last varnished in March 2011.

Ports & Hatches:  Hatches were reconditioned in 2004 to include new Lexan, new seals, and all hardware made to operate properly.  Forward-looking fixed ports were replaced with new Lexan and leaks were eliminated. Forward and Aft deck hatches were replaced with 2 Lewmar Ocean series hatches in March of 2011. Cost $2500.

Windlass:  Windlass replaced in 2002 with a new Albatros T2500.  Cost $4700.

Bow Thruster:  Original bow thruster was replaced in 2002 with a Sidepower Hydraulic thruster.  Cost $11,300. 

Prop: The 3 Blade MaxProp was factory refurbished the summer of 2009.  The prop shaft was trued in 2004.  The shaft log was replaced  in 2004 and a new dripless seal was installed in 2009 to eliminate a small leak.

Life Raft:  A new RFD life raft with a hydrostatic release was purchased in January 2005. Liferaft was last inspected in March 2011.   Cost $4600.

Dinghy:  New dinghy purchased in 2010.  Cost $2000

Outboard Motor:  New dinghy motor was purchased in 2009.  Cost $2600.

Paint:  Entire exterior of vessel was repainted in the summer of 2008.  Cost $17,000.

Rudder & Skeg:  Rudder bearing was replaced in 2010.  Skeg was reinforced on the interior with carbon fiber matting and a much larger stainless steel backing plate and on the exterior with additional fiberglass.  This was also accomplished in 2010.

VESSEL INTERIOR:

Lighting:  Most lighting was upgraded to LED for energy efficiency.
All interior lighting was replaced with Cantalupi Lighting in 2001.  Cost $3000+.

Ceiling:  Ceiling fabric was replaced after installing new lighting.

Interior:  New custom furniture and new cushions were purchased in 2002.  Cost $6000+.

Engine Room Fire Extinguisher:  Permanently installed 82 lb. Fire extinguisher was removed, hydrotested, refilled, and replaced in 2004.

Microwave:  Replaced in 2004 with a combo Micro/Conventional/Convective oven.

Watermaker:  A new Spectra 160 system was installed Spring of 2007.  Cost $6800.

Water heater:  New water heater was installed in March 2008.

Refrigerator:  New compressor was installed in December 2009.  Box was totally refurbished with new insulation and seals in the summer of 2010.  Cost $7800.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:

DC Electrical System:  Entire system was professionally reviewed and appropriately rewired to bring it up to ABYC standards by the Hinkley Yard in the Summer 2005.

Genset:  Onan 7.5Kw was replaced with a Northern Lights 8Kw in 2006 Aprox 4500 hours.

Three new Lifeline AGM batteries were installed December 2008.

Battery Charger:  Original replaced with a new 40 Amp Statpower charger in 1999.  A second 40 Amp Statpower was installed in December 2008.

Autopilot:  New Autohelm 6000 was installed in 1999 and is operating properly.

Inverter:  2000-watt inverter was installed in 2004.  Intended to handle only small appliances, not refrigerator or A/Cs.

Stoway Furling:  New motor in 1999.  New upper swivel in 2004.  Repaired Control box in 2004.  Works great.

Radios:  New VHF radio in the cockpit in 2004.  SSB radio completely refurbished in 2005.

SAILS:

A new Genoa was purchased in 2002.  New UV cover sewn on in January 2010.

A new Hood headsail roller furler was installed in March 2011. Cost $2600

Main sail replaced in 2006.

ELECTRONICS:

Radar/Chart Plotter:  New Furuno radar/chart plotter installed Jan 2005.  Cost $8500.

Wind, Speed, and Depth instruments:  New instruments installed in December 2010.
